KNOW your status as the world commemorates World Aids Day on Wednesday.

HIV-Aids continues to make deadly inroads into our lives. At a count of 5,7 million people living with the virus, South Africa has the highest number of people with HIV in the world.

Experts estimate five new infections for every two people initiating anti-retroviral therapy. The number of people infected far exceeds those receiving treatment.

The government embarked on an ambitious campaign last year to test 15 million people by April 2011. At the halfway mark at the end of October, a little more than 3 million people had been tested.

Knowing one's status goes a long way to ensuring that one protects oneself from the virus. Making sure that one does not become infected becomes the core to survival and bringing an end to the scourge. Let us unite to fight HIV-Aids.
