The Arch's way

THE likes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu never disappear from public life because they live on through legacies that continue to cast moral light on the world like a colossal torch.

They remain towering figures among us, inspiring many with their moral courage to speak out against evil when others would have been cowed into silence. They dare go where angels fear to tread and never tire of sharing their compassion with the downtrodden.

When South Africa soft-pedalled on Zimbabwe under the cover of silent diplomacy, Tutu called for the international community to intervene in that country - by force if necessary.

This inevitably angered Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who called Tutu an "angry, evil and embittered little bishop". But the affable Arch never flinched.

We wish him well. May he enjoy his bottomless rooibos tea on the stoep in the knowledge that he did it his way.
