Man killed by mother-in-law's tombstone

A 74-year-old man from the US city of Scranton has died after his mother-in-law’s headstone fell on him.

Stephen Woytack and his wife Lucy were on their annual Easter visit to the gravesite when the tragic incident took place.

According to thetimes-tribune.com, the two were attaching a religious ornament to the stone when it toppled and trapped the elderly man underneath it.

“It happened so quickly,” Mrs. Woytack, his wife of 46 years, was quoted saying.

The cemetery's caretaker, Ed Kubilus, told the paper that gravestones can become unstable during spring when the ground starts to thaw.

He usually fixes about five toppled or tipping stones around this time of year.
