Berlin police spokesman Thomas Neuendorf says the tunnel led from an underground garage into the bank's safe deposit room.

Neuendorf told The Associated Press Monday that the tunnel was "very professional" and must have taken weeks or even months to complete. It was elaborately constructed and even had ceiling supports.

Police were alerted to the break-in early Monday when a security guard noticed smoke coming from the deposit room.

Neuendorf says police are still trying to determine what valuables were stolen from the deposit boxes.

Details of the heist called to mind the spectacular robbery of another Berlin bank in 1995. During that robbery thieves entered the bank through the door, took hostages and demanded a helicopter and ransom.

Police besieged and eventually stormed the safe room where the thieves had holed up only to find they had escaped through a tunnel dug by accomplices. Several of the thieves were later caught.

Boy Mamabolo must hunt these guys down and employ them as his grave diggers in his fight against Sello Julius Malema. The gloves are off and I am sure you can make do with any sort of intelligence you can come across.

I have watched few movies, which use this method to rob banks.

I have to agree with you there is a programe called masterminds on the crime channel where the robbers used the very same method to rob a bank ( from a rented out garage to the banks vault)

And I always ask myself, what is the point of these programs? They say it's educational. Educating us to do what, to rob banks?

5 dr'unk robbers decide to go rob FNB in the CBD after a game of street-corner d'ice.. They go collect gun's and p@nty-h0se for mask their identification (not knowing that the p@nty-h0ses are full of h0les).. As part of their get-away car, they decide to use one of the uncle's Isuzu 1400 bakkie, which has to be kick-started before taking off..

As they approach the bank during peak hours, they decide to head in through the main door where survalliance cameras capture their identities through their worn p@nty-h0ses.. The head-teller presses the alarm, and all the bank doors are locked automatically.. The robbers are trapped inside and panicking and sweating..

Police arrive on the scene.. These robbers all receive life sentences without the possibility of parole..
