Man learns to walk again after removal of giant tumour

A man who recently had a 90-kilogram tumour removed from his right leg is learning to walk again, he said Monday.

Nguyen Duy Hai, 32, has been undergoing physical therapy at French-Vietnam Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and is using a walking frame to exercise his left leg.

"I am very happy. After eight years I can put my foot on the ground again," he told dpa.

The metre-wide tumour had been growing on Hai's leg for more than 30 years, despite an amputation at the knee 14 years ago. The growth was removed on January 5 during a 10-hour operation conducted by plastic surgeon McKay McKinnon and six Vietnamese doctors.

Hai said doctors told him he will have to remain in hospital for three more months before he is fully recovered.

"I want to get a job as a cellular phone repair man when I return home," he said.
