German man arrested in Bali for hashish smuggling

Airport authorities on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali have arrested a German national who allegedly swallowed 22 cannabis capsules, an immigration official said.

Martin Robert Moeller 41, was stopped at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport upon his arrival from Bangkok on Friday, the airport’s immigration chief Made Wijaya said.

“Officers became suspicious because his stomach looked hard,” Wijaya said.

Moeller was then taken to a hospital where he was found to have swallowed 22 capsules of hashish weighing a total of 288 grammes, the official said. He could face the death penalty if found guilty of drug trafficking.

Wijaya said the haul was estimated to have a street value of 172 million rupiah (17,800 dollars).

Moeller, a graphic designer from the city of Castrop-Rauxel in western Germany, said he bought the drug in Bangkok for 800 dollars for personal consumption.

“I’m so stupid and I’m sorry,” he said.
