Man dies while climbing Rio's Sugarloaf

Emergency responders say a 32-year-old man has fallen to his death while climbing one of Brazil's most-visited landmarks, Rio de Janeiro's Sugarloaf Mountain.

Emergency responders interviewed on Globo television said Bruno da Silva Mendes plunged about 197 feet (60 meters) while scaling with a friend. The woman was hospitalized with light injuries.

Eyewitness reports suggest a steel cable snapped as the pair approached the top of the 1,300-foot-tall (396-meter) mountain. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Emergency responders said Mendes' hanging body was evacuated from the sheer face of the mountain and taken to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

With its massive, rounded shape, Sugarloaf is one of the Rio's most iconic landmarks.
