THE prosecution in the war crimes trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has rejected his motion for a fresh trial.

THE prosecution in the war crimes trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on Monday rejected his motion for a fresh trial.

Karadzic has been on trial in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) since 2009 on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1992-95 Bosnia war.

On August 13 the defence asked the court for a fresh trial, saying Karadzic was not being afforded a fair trial and that prosecutors violated his rights by withholding evidence.

In its reasons on Monday, the prosecution said: "This trial is fair and should continue.

"In his motion, the accused does not show that a new trial is warranted, either as a remedy or as a sanction."

Karadzic was the leader of the Bosnian Serbs during the war, when Serb forces carried out ethnic cleansing in large swathes of the territory under their control, including the 1995 Srebrenica genocide.
