A British man and his five-year-old granddaught drowned on a visit to a beach known for its powerful waves in central Portugal, the local harbour master said.
The girl and her two grandparents, whose identities were not released, "were strolling in an unmonitored area of Salgado Beach" when they "were likely trapped by the waves," Antonio Jose de Albuquerque, head of Nazare port, told AFP.
Nearby fishermen saw the three struggling against the waves and helped pull them from the water, before calling for help.
"When help arrived, they were able to save the grandmother, but the grandfather was already dead. The first-aid workers tried in vain to revive the girl for nearly an hour," the port chief said.
The grandmother was taken to hospital and was said to be out of danger.
The beach lies between the fishing village of Nazare and the town of Sao Martinho do Porto, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Lisbon.
The dead man was said to be aged 66.
