5 police detained over abuse tapes

Five policemen who were part of a drug crimes squad have been detained in Argentina after video footage appearing to show the torture of two detainees was circulated by local media.

Security Minister Eduardo Sylvester announced the arrests late Thursday in the northern city of Salta, saying they were made after a "quick investigation" and denouncing the "crime committed by police personnel."

The video footage on the websites of major newspapers Clarin and La Nacion shows two detainees stripped down to their underwear in a paved courtyard.

An interrogator pours a bucket of water on the head of one detainee kneeling on the ground with his arms held up behind him.

Another interrogator places a plastic bag over the head of the other man and tightens it until the detainee falls to the ground. He then pulls the sack off as the man gasps for air.
