Vietnam teen murders grandmother to buy Christmas gifts

A court sentenced an 18-year-old Vietnamese man to death for strangling and robbing his grandmother so he could buy Christmas presents for his girlfriend, news reports said.

Hanoi People's Court found Phan Thanh Tung guilty of aggravated murder Tuesday, police-run newspaper An Ninh Thu Do reported.

The indictment said Tung offered a ride to his 74-year-old grandmother on December 24 but took her to a remote field, strangled her and stole her earrings plus 30,000 dong (1.5 dollars).

Tung then dumped the body in the river.

Tung sold the earrings for 400,000 dong (20 dollars) and bought a a Christmas tree and teddy bear for his girlfriend, Giao Duc Vietnam newspaper reported.

An accomplice was sentenced to 17 years in jail.

Vietnamese law calls for him to be executed by lethal injection within six months.
