Zulu to the rescue

Driver saved after being trapped in car that plunged down hillside

Badly injured after his car plunged down a hillside on a remote Scots island, Donald McGregor had no way to raise the alarm - and faced perishing outside in the dark, in the freezing cold.

But the pensioner hadn’t bargained for the heroics of Zulu, his faithful dog.

The black terrier raced more than half a mile to McGregor’s daughter’s home to alert her to the emergency.

Rescuers then contacted a ferryman, who managed to race against the tide to ensure  McGregor made it to the mainland where an ambulance was waiting to whisk him to hospital.

He is being treated for a punctured lung, fractured vertebrae and multiple broken ribs.
