Swiss police say thieves have purloined a 220-pound (100-kilo) safe from a youth hostel in a ski resort and apparently used a stolen snowboard to make off with their weighty loot.

Graubuenden cantonal (state) police said someone broke into the building in Valbella, in southeastern Switzerland, Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday.

They took the safe from the hostel's office, along with an unspecified quantity of cash and checks. A snowboard also was taken and police say in a statement that they believe it was used to spirit away the safe.

Police appealed for information from anyone who might have seen anything suspicious.
