Hundreds trapped in Hong Kong's Big Buddha cable car

The cable car ride to the Big Buddha statue in Hong Kong was suspended Thursday after 700 tourists were trapped in cold conditions for up to 90 minutes by a breakdown.

The 5.6-kilometre cable car on Hong Kong's Lantau Island halted because of a technical fault Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of Chinese New Year holidaymakers were on board.

Seven hundred people were trapped in gondolas for up to 90 minutes with air temperatures dipping to 3 degrees Celsius on Hong Kong's coldest day of the year so far.

The cable car operator apologized and announced on its website Thursday that the service would be closed for 10 days while an investigation and safety checks are conducted.

The cable car ride, which normally takes 25 minutes, opened in 2006 and has been dogged by technical hitches. The most serious was in June 2007 when an empty cable car fell from its cable and crashed onto a hillside.
