Violence breaks out in demolition of Shanty houses

Twelve people were injured today when squatters in a Philippine suburban city clashed with teams sent to demolish their shanty houses, police said.

The victims were mostly members of the demolition teams that were to destroy 300 houses illegally constructed on land owned by the municipal government of the suburban city of San Juan in Manila.

Angry residents threw rocks, bottles and petrol bombs at the demolition workers, who proceeded with their work after the riot.

Police said 11 residents were arrested for attempting to stop the demolition, which was the second attempt to evict about 2,000 squatters from the land that was intended for a new city hall.
