Ivory Coast army chief seeks SA refuge

THE Ivory Coast's army chief of staff General Phillippe Mangou has sought refuge at the official residence of the South African ambassador, the department of international relations and co-operation said yesterday

In a statement, spokesperson Clayson Monyela said Mangou his wife and five children sought refuge at the residence of ambassador Zodwa Lallie on Wednesday night.

"The SA government is in consultation with the relevant parties in the Ivory Coast, Economic Community of West African States and the African Union," he said.

Yesterday recognised Ivory president Alassane Ouattara called on soldiers loyal to incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo to "join" his army.

The television address came as Ouattara declared his forces were at the gates of Abidjan to oust his rival who refuses to cede power four months after a disputed election.

He said unlike the militia and mercenaries in the pay of his rival, his Republican Forces army "has decided to restore democracy".
