Gunbattles kill 18 in Northeastern Mexican town

Gunbattles between rival gangs have killed 18 people in a northeastern Mexican town.

The Tamaulipas state government says the fighting occurred early Monday in the town of Abasolo. It gave no other details in a three-sentence statement.

Tamaulipas has been wracked by a turf war between the Zetas and Gulf cartels and information on violence in some towns is notoriously scarce.

Monday's bloodshed came a month after 18 people, including several innocent bystanders, were killed during fighting in the nearby town of Padilla.
