ELECTION RESULTS - as it happens: ANC in comfortable lead nationally as vote count reaches 99%

The ANC went to the elections under very controversial circumstances in Tshwane following its announcement that former public works minister Thoko Didiza was its mayoral candidate in the city. Angry ANC members and residents in various townships started violent protests which brought the nation’s capital to a standstill.

On the other hand‚ Johannesburg looked promising for the ruling party and it retained Parks Tau as the mayor believing he had done enough to keep the ANC in power. But votes are now showing that not everyone was pleased with the ruling party in the economic hub.

Johannesburg houses the financial services sector‚ Johannesburg Stock Exchange and will soon be home to the new Brics development bank.
