Man sentenced for raping granddaughter

A 65-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment by the Esikhawini Regional Court for raping his nine-year-old granddaughter, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the man was sentenced on Wednesday.

On August 27, 2012, the nine-year-old was playing with other children when her grandfather took her to his house and raped her.

"He was caught in the act by the victim's mother who then reported the matter to the police," Naicker said.

"After a speedy investigation, the accused was arrested a day later and was charged with rape."

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence.
