Madiba named the infant Qheya Zanethemba (‘to bring hope’)
The Madiba clan has gathered to welcome the arrival of Nelson Mandela’s eighth great-grandson, the Sunday Times reported.
Relatives gathered in Qunu in the Eastern Cape at the weekend for a private family ritual to appease the ancestors and welcome the child to the family’s homestead.
Mandela, 93, had been asked to name the infant, the newspaper reported.
The boy was born two weeks ago to Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela, and his wife Nobubele.
Mandla is Mandela's heir and a traditional leader in Mvezo, Mandela’s birthplace.
