Internet can create jobs

RESTRICTED: Free the Internet.
RESTRICTED: Free the Internet.

UNEMPLOYED people should be able to access information if South Africa is serious about eradicating unemployment.

The Internet should be accessible to all. We must ensure that we have an informed society and younger generation so that people can access information freely online.

At present in South Africa there are a limited number of public places where one can access the Internet. Internet cafés should not be the only places young people can go to search for jobs and other information.

Fees to access the Internet are also too high.

According to Statistics South Africa the unemployment rate was above 25% in the first quarter of this year. I do not expect any drastic changes in the numbers in the second quarter.

If we make the Internet accessible to all, we will begin to see an improvement.

The Department of Communications has its work cut out for it to ensure that schools are connected.

The department should be commended for providing computers and Information and Communications Technology infrastructure to schools through its National Connectivity Plan for Schools project. However, they will have to go the extra mile to make sure that schools have reliable and sustainable Internet access.

This will empower a significant number of pupils to navigate the worldwide web and access information about careers.

Some have argued that the Internet should not be made available to young people because many of them would watch porn and download movies and games.

There are ways around this, such as investing in software to block them visiting such sites. Parents and teachers will also need to educate children about these dangers .

Though I personally do not see a sober, young, desperate unemployed person wasting time online instead of looking for useful information or searching for jobs.

Public libraries should also have free Internet because young and old South Africans often use these facilities.

Many companies and government departments are recruiting online and most young people, particularly blacks in rural communities, do not have access to the Internet .

Government and business should free online accessibility to all.
