Provident fund that refused to pay will give back more than R500,000

DISEGO Kekana, 36, was told he would get his provident fund payout when he reached 65. He resigned from Unilever in February last year.

Unilever funds are administered by Alexander Forbes. They told him Unilever was investigating fraud he allegedly committed before he quit. There was no formal charge and he had not been questioned about any criminal activity, he says.

"Instead, Unilever called two weeks ago asking me to return," he says.

An unidentified person from Alexander Forbes told Consumer Line that Kekana cannot withdraw his money until he retires, but that he could transfer the funds to a preservation fund.

However, they have since had a change of heart and have agreed to release Kekana's money. He will be paid more than R500000 by the end of this week.
