Victims of Limpopo accident involving truck and taxi identified

The bodies of nine people who died in an accident involving a taxi and a truck which collided head-on in Limpopo on Tuesday have been identified.

The victims died on the R579 road between Lebowakgomo and Jane Furse when the taxi in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck that was trying to overtake another truck. The taxi was ferrying passengers from GaMasemola to Lebowakgomo when the accident happened at around 7am. Six of the victims were men while three were women.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe named the victims as Mitchell Masemola‚ Mmamangwidi Kola‚ Mathari Rosemary Sefoka (all women)‚ Mamphole Ramakgwale‚ Journey Mphahlele‚ Harold Nkobo‚ Rapolai John Ramaru‚ Taelo Talane and Pududu Maphuthuma.

According to spokesman for the provincial department of health‚ Thabiso Teffo‚ seven other passengers from the taxi

were injured. He said three of those injured were airlifted to the Mankweng and Polokwane hospitals respectively. Teffo on Wednesday described their conditions as “critical but stable”

Speaker of the Limpopo legislature‚ Polly Boshielo‚ sent condolences on Wednesday to the families of deceased and also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“Words cannot even begin to explain how I feel about this terrible accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult time and we also wish the injured ones a speedy recovery‚” said Boshielo who further encouraged motorists and pedestrians to “at all times” obey the rules of the road.
