The ANC is worried about the conduct of embattled Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.

The organisation's secretary-general Gwede Mantashe yesterday told Sowetan her performance on the social grants payment had also further divided the governing party.

"Like any divided organisation, the ANC will generally be worried about her conduct.

"But some will nonetheless continue to give her political support whereas others will rejoice at her blunders while still worrying about the damage this will do to the ruling party," Mantashe said.

His comments come amid growing sentiments of a rift between himself and President Jacob Zuma.

Dlamini, who is also president of the ANC Women's League, is widely perceived to be in Zuma's camp. The ANCWL under her stewardship is in favour of former African Union Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma succeeding Zuma as ANC leader.

The ANC holds its national elective conference in December when a new leadership will be elected.

The differences between Mantashe and Zuma were aired publicly in the matter of Andile Lungisa, who attacked Mantashe days before his election as ANC Nelson Mandela Bay chairman.

Zuma had endorsed the election of Lungisa while Mantashe feels his election was irregular.

Responding to Mantashe's remarks, secretary of the ANCWL Meokgo Matuba, said if there were issues they should be raised internally and people should not run to the media.

She said Dlamini was being targeted after the league made pronouncements it was in favour of a woman president succeeding Zuma.

"The relations with some ANC members are not good after the ANCWL said it wants a female president," she said.

Matuba said the ANCWL was engaging Dlamini on the social grants scandal.

"We don't want to dwell much on who is doing what and who did what," she said.

"From where we are sitting, we have been given assurance that the social grants will be paid out come April 1."

On Tuesday, the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal stopped short of calling Dlamini "incompetent" and warned that if the court findings revealed she was part of the social grants crisis, she should be fired.
