The bank deposit slip that former Eskom boss Brian Molefe apparently used to "renew" his ANC membership has caused a lot of fear among FNB's employees.

Workers at the FNB branch in Hartbeespoort were reluctant to be interviewed but they confirmed the suspension of a colleague.

"That girl [the consultant] was only trying to help someone and she got caught up in this mess. We feel sorry for her. As far as we know she was not even interested in politics.

"We don't even want to hear that Brian Molefe name anymore. Every time we hear it we get scared because it means trouble," said an employee who wanted to remain anonymous.

Two weeks ago the ANC in ward 29 branch in Madibeng, North West, produced two of Molefe's ANC membership forms during a press conference in a bid to defend the party's decision to appoint him as a parliamentarian.

Questions were raised over Molefe's branch membership which caused ructions in the divided ANC, with Molefe's deployment to parliament seen as a precursor to his appointment to President Jacob Zuma's cabinet..

One of the documents brandished by ANC members during the press conference reflected that Molefe had paid his membership renewal fee in May 2011 at the FNB branch of Village Mall in Hartbeespoort. However, questions were raised about the bank stamp which reflected "back office" instead of a teller number.

The second slip showed the deposit was made at the FNB in the Brits CBD in November 2015.

Now the bank has confirmed that it is conducting an investigation into the matter and that one of its employees had since been suspended.

Ward 29 secretary Christina Malulu, who has been vocal about Molefe not being a member in her branch, said she suspected that someone inside the bank had assisted Molefe to back date the stamp to make it look as if he had been their branch member for many years.

"The form is real but the stamp is fake. It doesn't even show which teller processed the deposit. Whoever did this was involved in the sneaking of Molefe into parliament as an MP," Malulu said.

"The ANC will be meeting with FNB as part of this ongoing process and will seek clarity on the unfortunate public commentary in relation to its account with the bank and one of our members," read the statement issued by party spokesman Zizi Kodwa yesterday.

He said the meeting would also address matters relating to the upcoming national conferences in June and December.

"The process is being undertaken as a matter of general application without regard to any single individual or case but rather with the intention to improve the ANC's overall management of our membership process," read the statement.
