Price of human life: Tragedy in Durban court cells as woman commits suicide

A 31-year-old woman accused of stealing six plastic chairs hung herself in the holding cells of the Magistrate’s Court in Durban‚ police say.

The woman was arrested at the weekend‚ and was set to appear in court on Monday. However‚ at about 3.30pm‚ she was found hanging from her jersey in the cells.

“Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. An inquest docket is being investigated by Durban Central SAPS‚” said spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwana.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate‚ there were 216 deaths in police custody in the 2015/16 year; 27 of these were in KwaZulu-Natal‚ the second highest behind Gauteng which had 44.
