KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a mass shooting in Isipingo Rail‚ north of Durban‚ which left four people dead on Thursday night.

It is understood that a group of armed men stormed a shack in Nogin Road in the Pilgrims Rest informal settlement.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the lead-up to the shooting was still unclear.

“We can confirm that four people were shot and killed and other five were wounded yesterday. Four counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder were opened at Isipingo for further investigation. No arrests have been made‚” she said.

Gwala stressed that the motive for the shooting spree was unknown and that the gunmen had fled the scene on foot.

The injured remain in a serious condition in a city hospital after they were rushed from the scene by ambulance.
