Senior African National Congress politician Lindiwe Sisulu will not be attending a public event at a high school in Khayelitsha‚ Cape Town‚ to mark her birthday‚ her office says.

This is despite a poster being circulated advertising her attendance on May 13.

Sisulu‚ minister of human settlements and ANC national executive committee member being tipped as a potential presidential contender‚ turns 62 on May 10.

“Minister Sisulu has never and will not start anytime soon going around and holding birthday parties.

“The Minister is rather more dedicated in finding solutions for the people of South Africa who are in dire need of housing‚” the human settlements office said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sisulu is a recent widow‚ after her husband Kenyan academic Professor Rok Ajulu‚ died of cancer at the age of 66 at the end of December 2016. They were reported to have five children and five grandchildren.

Sisulu’s late mother Albertina used to celebrate her birthday by promoting the work of the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa‚ a charity organisation named after her husband that is run from within Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. The organisation works to raise funds to help pay for surgery for children with congenital heart defects.
