Nyanga hostage drama ends‚ suspect killed

A lengthy standoff at the Nyanga Junction Mall in Manenberg‚ Cape Town‚ ended with 10 hostages being released and one person being shot dead.

After the release of the 10 hostages‚ members of the special task force entered the building to ensure that there were no other people inside. It was that operation that resulted in the seizure of two firearms and one suspect being shot dead.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the task team had managed to evacuate the hostages from a Shoprite supermarket on Monday afternoon.

“Of the 11 people taken out of the building‚ 10 are said to be hostages employed by the retail store and one‚ the suspect‚ who was earlier injured‚” said Potelwa.

“The suspect was treated on the scene and taken to hospital under police guard.”

Earlier‚ three people emerged from the building where the hostage situation had played out. The three were believed to be cleaners who were trapped inside the building. They were helped out by the task force.

Scores of police officers‚ including a hostage negotiator‚ the national intervention unit and a squad of detectives‚ descended on the premises when news broke of a botched armed robbery.

Potelwa said several shots were heard inside the mall on Monday morning. Initial reports indicated that a shootout between security personnel and suspects had occurred.
