Speaking at a press conference‚ axed finance minister Pravin Gordhan was asked about his relationship with President Jacob Zuma‚ who fired him.

“I have known him since 1974‚” said Gordhan. “There have always been instructive engagements. I hope to visit him soon and have a cup of tea and talk about things we have mutual interest in.”

Outside the briefing at treasury‚ crowds sang and called for corruption in government to end. The protest was organised by civil society group Save SA.

Citizens also spoke out. Kim Harrisburg said she had come to the event “because it is better than using Twitter or complaining about the state of the country“.

Brakpan resident Bongani Mguni said he believed other countries‚ including Russia and China‚ knew South Africa was up for sale. He vowed to continue protesting.

Moegamat Abrahams had come from Midrand‚ missing a few hours of work . He said “everybody is not happy about the corruption. Zuma is doing his own thing.”

Gordhan addressed the crowd thanking them for their support. He said South Africans had to stand against corruption‚ adding that the ANC also had to fight corruption.

Earlier he used his press conference to ask ANN7 to come forward and ask him a question. “This is an open democracy.”

He said he was tired of the constant attacks by ANN 7. “Why do you attack family members? Play fair. Be transparent. We have nothing to hide.”

But ANN7 was silent.

He said South Africans need to come together — he had learnt from the ANC that fragmented voices were not as powerful as organised ones.

Asked why Gordhan and his deputy minister‚ Mcebisi Jona‚s had been fired Jonas said “South Africans must connect the dots“. He referred to former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report and other events.

Jonas said South Africans had to wake up – or citizens would be accused of having their “eyes wide shut“.
