THE so-called Alexandra "balaclava rapist" was found guilty of rape, kidnapping and robbery in the South Gauteng High Court in Joburg on Tuesday.
Judge Ingrid Opperman found Xaniseka Mkansi, 48, guilty of 14 counts of rape, 11 of robberies and two cases of kidnapping. However, Judge Opperman acquitted Mkansi on two counts of rape.
The case was postponed to March 24 for sentencing.
The court heard how Mkansi and his accomplice Sija Mabitsela, 37, humiliated their victims during the rapes.
Mkansi and Mabitsela allegedly operated in East Bank park, Tsutsumani, West Bank cemetery and Jukskei park in Alexandra.
Mkansi appeared alone in court yesterday, while Mabitsela is due in court on March 15 for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to 76 charges, including rape, assault and robbery.
One of the rape survivors from the township had to quit her job and cut her long hair to conceal her identity after her ordeal.
After she was repeatedly raped and robbed of her belongings including a cellphone in East Bank in 2015, her attackers sent a text message to her boyfriend informing him that they had had sex with her.
These were the chilling details read out by Opperman in court. He said another rape survivor testified how she was kidnapped with her boyfriend and taken to a dilapidated shopping complex in Alexandra.
She was made to squeeze her breast at gunpoint to ascertain if she was breast-feeding. She was repeatedly raped by two armed men hiding their faces behind balaclavas, the court heard.
The court proceedings were held in camera because some of the witnesses were minors.
It is also alleged that Mabitsela, who is a local sangoma, operated alone from 2007 and was later joined by Mkansi, a parolee.
"In some of the cases, the accused would allegedly force the boyfriends to have sex with their partners while the two watched."
In 2014, the accused got a ride from a couple driving in a Toyota Avanza. The suspects pulled out a firearm, forced the couple to a dilapidated house where they took turns raping the woman.
