Hawks nab suspects for roadworthiness fraud

The Hawks and crime intelligence officials have arrested three suspects accused of fraudulently issuing roadworthy certificates in the North West.

Daniel Joseph van der Merwe (65)‚ Basitana Genete Bogopane (45) and Otshepeng Benjamen Makgale (30) were arrested last Monday and appeared in the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court the next day. They were released on bail of R1‚000 each and are due back in court on the 28th of this month‚ the Hawks said in a statement on Thursday.

Van der Merwe and Bogopane are employees of a private roadworthy testing station in Lefaragatlhe in Rustenburg. Makgale‚ a taxi operator‚ is accused of recruiting clients who wanted roadworthy certificates for their vehicles.

Prosecutors say that Van der Merwe and Bogopane issued the certificates‚ at a cost of R1‚000‚ without examining the vehicles.
