Inkatha Freedom Party Youth Brigade chairman Mkhuleko Hlengwa has accused KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube of politically raping the constitution by dissolving the defunct Nquthu Municipality.
Hlengwa‚ who is also an IFP Member of Parliament‚ said in a youth wing statement on Wednesday that Dube-Ncube had aided and abetted “the kindergarten theatrics of the ANC” in Nquthu in order to prevent his party from leading the coalition government.
It was decided this week to dissolve the municipal council because‚ more than six months after the August local government election‚ a stalemate has meant that neither an ANC-led nor an IFP-led coalition could take power.
The municipality was unable to elect office bearers‚ including mayor‚ deputy mayor or speaker — despite seven different attempts to do so.
“We are not intimidated by these shenanigans‚ but we are concerned by the political rape of the constitution and will of the people. We must not lose sight of the fact that the MEC is also the deputy secretary of the ANC in KZN and therefore she is bound to act in line with the party interests‚” said Hlengwa.
He lashed out the decision to dissolve the municipality‚ saying it was “nothing but pure ANC desperation and a blatant abuse of process”.
Hlengwa said Dube-Ncube has been “hell-bent on preventing the IFP from taking over the municipality because the ANC is a bunch of sore losers who know nothing about smooth transfer of power”.
“The people of Nquthu spoke loudly and clearly on 3 August and rejected the ANC and chose the IFP. The politically-motivated decision to dissolve the Nquthu Municipality seeks to silence the will of the people‚” said Hlengwa.
The municipality was dissolved on Monday and it was the only one in the country that still did not have a mayor‚ deputy mayor or speaker and could not hold council meetings.
