R7‚9m heroin bust at Mozambique border post

Heroin wrapped in yellow parcels and valued at of R7‚9 million were sniffed out at the Lebombo border post by the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and police narcotics detector dogs.

The 25 parcels were found hidden in the door panels and behind the driver seat of a bakkie entering South Africa from Mozambique‚ according to a statement by Sars on Friday.

A customs and excise dog handler was performing random searches when the bakkie was stopped for inspection.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of contravening the Customs and Excise Act and Drug Trafficking Act. The consignment of heroin and the vehicle have been released to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
