TUT guard arrested for attempted murder after student shot with live ammo

A Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) security guard who allegedly shot a protesting student with live ammunition on Thursday has been arrested.

Police spokeswoman Sally de Beer said the guard was arrested for attempted murder late on Thursday following the shooting of the student at the main campus.

“It is alleged that a security guard’s shotgun went off by mistake‚ shooting a student. In a moment of panic‚ the security guard and two others he was with ran off‚” De Beer said.

De Beer said that immediately after the shooting the student was taken to hospital and 11 shotguns were seized‚ along with ammunition.

TUT said classes wouild continue on Friday‚ and said Thursday’s disruptions at its Pretoria‚ Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve campuses were “managed and contained‚ and minimal damage to property was sustained”.
