Office and car burnt hours after truce signed at DUT

Just hours after confirming that protests would be suspended and classes would resume‚ the vice-principal’s office and a staff vehicle were engulfed in flames at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

The fires burnt in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Online campus radio station @RadioDUT posted images of the damage caused by the fires: “One of DUT’s staff vehicles were set alight last night. Cause of fire is still unknown. #DUT

“The Vice-Principal’s office was also set alight in the early hours of this morning at DUT. #DUT #FeesMustFall #Fees2017‚” the station reported on its twitter feed.

There was a heavy security presence on campus on Wednesday.

Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Theo Andrew said in a letter to staff and students on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with the student representative council (SRC) to resume classes.

“I am pleased to confirm‚ as per the agreement reached with our SRC‚ that from Wednesday‚ 5 October 2016‚ … the student protest action at DUT will be suspended and all classes will resume‚” he said.

“However‚ the police will still be monitoring the situation at DUT and we have been advised by police management that they will take the necessary action to prevent any further disruption to our academic calendar.” – TMG Digital
