News24 journalist Kaveel Singh‚ who was arrested while covering student protests at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Friday afternoon‚ has been released without charge.
He described the experience as “horrible“.
Singh was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and trespassing while on the university’s Westville campus as police and students clashed. The charges did not hold‚ however‚ and he was released at about 4.30pm.
But at 5pm the six UKZN students arrested at the same time were still being detained. A police officer‚ who would not be named‚ said they would be granted bail of R1 000 each and would be released once payment was made.
Before her arrest‚ one of the six‚ identified as Phindile Dimani‚ was pictured with a sign that read: “Would you shoot your own children?“
Ndabenhle Ntshangase‚ who was not arrested‚ said students were singing in the campus quad when police ordered them to disperse. When they failed to do so‚ rubber bullets and stun grenades were fired.
Earlier this month UKZN got a court order that‚ among other things‚ prevented students from “illegal gathering” and damaging property.
The six students have been charged with disobeying that court order‚ convening an illegal gathering‚ convening a gathering without giving proper notice and disobeying police orders.
