University of Witwatersrand student leaders have questioned the timing of the discovery of petrol bombs allegedly found on the main campus on Saturday.

“It’s very convenient that petrol bombs were found just after the university has sent a threat that it will suspend all academic activities and close down residences.

“I mean we were never told who found those petrol bombs and the exact location‚ that is quite convenient‚” said incoming Wits SRC president Kefentse Mkhari.

He was speaking to TMG Digital while waiting for a meeting with faith-based organisations as well as parents to start.

“I think this is a strategy for the university to try and detour and de-mobilise students from this movement‚” said Mkhari.

The student leaders organised the meeting to call for the participation of these stakeholders in their fight for free education.

On Saturday‚ the university sent out a statement saying: “The University can confirm that three petrol bombs were found on the Braamfontein campus today. They were found behind a building close to a fence. The police are currently investigating the matter. All University activities remain suspended until further notice‚” said Shirona Patel‚ Wits head of communications.

On Friday‚ hundreds of students marched to the ANC headquarters‚ Luthuli House‚ to hand over a memorandum of demands to the leaders of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).

They called on the trade union federation to mobilise the working class to join forces with them when they march to the Chamber of Commerce on October 14.
