African National Congress (ANC) deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte has called on all South Africans to remain calm in the wake of the battle between the Hawks and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

“Everybody needs to calm down. We need to put the facts on the table and not make irreparable statements. I think the statement by the SACP (South African Communist Party) is a bit dangerous for all of us at the moment‚ but there is always tomorrow and a room for discussion‚” Duarte told SABC Morning Live today.

SACP leader Blade Nzimande had on Sunday said the “putative charges…are designed to remove Gordhan from office and weaken the Treasury’s struggle against corruption and corporate capture”.

Duarte urged Gordhan to cooperate with the Hawks as the standoff between the parties had serious implications for South Africa.

She rejected the view that President Jacob Zuma wants to “get rid of the reds” (communists)‚ saying it was not based on facts.

“I think we must actually get to a point of fact and not have this ugly media thing. Why are we doing this? It does not actually make sense. We are playing into the hands of people who say that the demise of the ANC is the rise of the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) and DA (Democratic Alliance)‚” Duarte said.

Last week‚ the Hawks summoned Gordhan and other former SA Revenue Service officials to present themselves for questioning over the unit.

But Gordhan refused to go‚ saying had been advised by lawyers that he was “under no obligation” to present himself to the unit.

Zuma on Thursday said he had no power to stop any investigations‚ but expressed his “full support and confidence” in Gordhan‚ stressing that the finance minister “has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing”.

There are concerns that charging Gordhan could wreak havoc in the financial markets and shatter investor confidence‚ which could see the nation’s credit ratings downgraded to junk status.
