Eight suspects nabbed in crackdown on illicit drug trafficking in KZN

A six-month undercover drug operation saw eight suspects apprehended for illicit drug trafficking in KwaZulu-Natal‚ police said on Saturday.

The Umgungundlovu North Cluster Office together with the Crime Intelligence Unit and SAPS Mountain Rise Detective Drug Unit engaged in an undercover drug project since February this year.

According to police‚ the team has been monitoring the dealing of crack cocaine by the eight suspects‚ including drug sale transactions worth approximately R375‚000 in the Northdale‚ Bombay Heights & Mountview‚ in Pietermaritzburg.

The suspects‚ aged between 23 and 52‚ were arrested in the early hours of Friday Morning.

“The team also seized various items‚ crack cocaine with a street of value R5‚000‚ Jewellery to the value of +-R75‚000 including R25‚000 in cash.

“Several cocaine pipes including wrappings used for packaging the drugs was seized from two premises‚” police said.

Four of the suspects are currently serving suspended sentences for dealing in drugs.

One of the suspects‚ who was operating in Vengagda Road in Pietermaritzburg‚ was using his barber shop at his residence as a front‚ police added.
