Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has once again gone ahead of an official announcement by the Electoral Commission to announce that the hotly contested capital city‚ Tshwane‚ will ultimately belong to his party.

“I’m quite glad to announce that here in the City of Tshwane‚ all our current projections (show) we will certainly be the largest party and therefore I want to congratulate the DA for having successfully beaten the ANC here in Tshwane‚” Maimane said on Friday.

“I want to congratulate Solly Msimanga (the DA’s Tshwane mayoral candidate) for having run an exceptional campaign.

“I think the people of Tshwane have expressed a view and I think for us‚ it’s really positive that the project of democracy is fully at work. Now we have got to do everything in our power to make sure where we govern‚ we govern well‚” said Maimane.

Maimane signalled that the DA would now go ahead and put together a coalition government to rule in Tshwane.

The DA and the EFF would be the most obvious partners.

If confirmed‚ this would be devastating for the ANC‚ with both the legislative (Cape Town) and administrative capitals (Tshwane) in opposition hands.

Asked why he didn’t wait for the results to be formally announced‚ Maimane said: “We have been waiting for most of the day and if you can recall‚ the IEC took a break and there has been exceptional delays in terms of how quickly the results have been coming in‚” acknowledging that he wasn’t giving a full and final briefing of the results.

Ironically‚ according to the Electoral Commission’s Results Dashboard‚ it showed that the ANC was leading with 42.7% followed by the DA with 42.19% and the EFF in third place with 11.06%.

Msimanga also weighed in the declaration.

“We have run a very long and hard race in this campaign and it is indeed a humbling privilege that I will get to serve the people of my city‚ the City of Tshwane.

“I do still believe that if the capital city works‚ the whole of South Africa will work and the world will see us through the eyes of a working capital city‚” said Msimanga.

The DA’s announcement on Tshwane came an hour after the Economic Freedom Fighters held their own briefing where they accepted defeat in municipalities they were competing in.
