ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe has reiterated that as suspended ANC Western Cape chairman Marius Fransman must still appear before a disciplinary committee he cannot return to work.

He was responding to a statement by Fransman saying he was assuming his duties and responsibilities again“.

“I have never ceased to be the Western Cape ANC leader since my election to the office. I have voluntarily stepped aside to allow the integrity commission to conclude its work without interference‚ and am now assuming my duties and responsibilities again at the conclusion of that process. My prolonged absence was only the result of a poorly managed internal process‚” Fransman charged on Saturday.

There has however been confusion over whether Fransman‚ who was suspended pending an investigation into claims of sexual harassment‚ could return to work‚ with conflicting statements by ANC officials.

The organisation’s head of elections‚ Nomvula Mokonyane‚ said on Thursday that Fransman was back and that “issues have been resolved”. However‚ ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa later said the embattled Western Cape leader had not been officially reinstated.

Mantashe was then quoted as saying that the integrity commission which was handling Fransman’s matter had completed its work and has recommended that the case be given to the disciplinary committee. But‚ as Fransman had not yet appeared before the disciplinary committee‚ he could not return to his position.

Mantashe repeated the statement on Monday‚ saying members of the party must always respect the decisions taken by the structures of the organisation.

“As I said last week and I am repeating it…decisions in the ANC are taken by structures. If you wake up and do as you wish you are actually fishing for trouble‚” Mantashe said.

The national working committee of the ANC asked Fransman to step down earlier this year in the wake of sexual assault allegations leveled against him.

The party launched an investigation into claims he sexually assaulted his former assistant Louisa Wynand.
