Anna Madonsela is stabbed to death for putting up an election poster in KwaZulu-Natal

A member of the National Freedom Party (NFP) was stabbed to death while putting up posters in Newcastle‚ northern KwaZulu-Natal‚ on Thursday.

Anna Madonsela was in ward 4‚ when she got into an argument with a man wearing an ANC T-shirt and he allegedly stabbed her‚ according to the NFP’s district secretary for Amajuba‚ Lindiwe Msibi.

She believed the attack was politically motivated‚ saying the NFP was a “threat” to other political parties in the area.

Although‚ the NFP was not on the ballot paper for this year’s local government elections‚ Msibi said the party was hopeful its latest bid in the Electoral Court would be successful‚ and so the party continued to campaign.

The NFP filed papers on Wednesday in an effort to convince the Electoral Court to have a decision preventing it from contesting the August 3 polls overturned.

The party was barred from participating after its treasurer failed pay the required deposit by the June 2 deadline.

The NFP approached the Electoral Court at the time but their bid to be included was unsuccessful.

There have been a number of killings‚ said to be politically motivated‚ in KwaZulu-Natal‚ in the lead up to the election.

Thirteen ANC leaders and members have been killed since April.
