Residents in some suburbs in Johannesburg have been without electricity for three days.

Northwold‚ Sonneglans and Strydom Park ratepayers were furious on Wednesday afternoon‚ after complaining on the City Power Twitter account for days about the outage but not getting any joy.

Central to the complaints are the length of time it is taking to bring the power back‚ broken promises of the power supply being brought back on-line earlier in the week and poor communication about the cause of the fault.

@Karin Iten sounded desperate when she tweeted: “City Power‚ please advise on power outage (day 3) in Northwold. I have tweeted repeatedly and no reply from you at all”.

@Gregs82 said: “Can we please have answers #Northwold”.

@shunter0001 was even worse off‚ tweeting on Monday: “@CityPowerJhb 5th night in a row the power has been out in Northwold”. He provided a fault reference. The city’s response was a terse: “Northwold has been escalated”.

City Power acting spokesperson Yumna Sheik said on Wednesday night they were experiencing a combination of a technical problem and cable theft.

“Initially we had a technical fault on a cable in Northwold and then this morning‚ about 2am‚ we had a major cable stolen and that caused the outage.

“We are currently on site trying to restore power back in the area. We are actually in the process of switching on as we speak‚” Sheik said.

Meanwhile‚ eight suburbs in Johannesburg including Doornfontein‚ Troyville‚ Jeppestown and Yeoville have been told by City Power that their electricity will be off for “planned maintenance” from 10pm tonight until 6am tomorrow‚ Thursday.
