As of Monday‚ the M1 carriageway will officially get smaller as road rehabilitation continues prompting Johannesburg road users to find alternatives.

The Johannesburg Road Agency has said the M1 southbound will be reduced to two lanes from the Killarney area to the St Andrews off-ramp.

Residents of the Rosebank and Houghton areas looking to travel south will have to find alternative routes‚ as the southern on-ramp onto the M1 from Oxford road will be closed at Ettrick road.

Councillor Christian Walters had said the rehabilitation was important due to dangerous flooding on the double-decker section of the M1.

“This section of the freeway is a key arterial route through the heart of Johannesburg and daily carries approximately 80‚000 private cars‚ commercial traffic and public transport...all vital to the growth of southern-most important economic hub‚” Walters said.

Certain lanes on the M1 double-decker section will be closed until July 6‚ 2017‚ on weekdays between 9.30am and 2.30pm.
