Taxi association accepts blame for fatal taxi accidents

The president of the South African National Taxi Council‚ Phillip Taaibos‚ has apologised for the role taxis play in road accidents in South Africa.

“As the taxi industry we are saying sorry. We will not [feel] ashamed if you were to put the blame solely on us. We are the owners of these taxis which continue to kill your people‚” Taaibos said.

He was speaking at the memorial service of for the 14 victims of a tragic head-on collision between a taxi and a truck on the R41 in Randfontein on the West Rand last Friday.

The collision was one of 179 accidents that occurred in six days in the country.

Speaking at the memorial service on Wednesday‚ Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi Malobane said: “We are going to talk directly with the taxi drivers that this nonsense must come to a stop.

“We can’t bury people because people are careless‚ they are rushing...to cover as many areas as possible at the expense of our people‚” she added.

Gauteng MEC for Finance Barbara Creecy told the victims’ families and community members‚ that it felt like a dark cloud had descended over Gauteng over the past long weekend.

“As I stood there in that horror (at the R41 crash site)‚ all I could think about was somewhere at home‚ you were waiting‚” Creecy told the crowd.
