President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday that the Regulation of Land Holdings Bill, which will ban foreign-ownership of agricultural land in South Africa, would be tabled in Parliament this year.

“They will only be able to lease the land,” he stressed in his response to the two-day debate on his state of the nation address.

Zuma had, in last year’s opening address to the legislature, also pledged that the bill, which has been criticised by the opposition as an impediment to investment, would be tabled during the course of the year.
