Army names South African soldiers killed and injured after DRC attack

A South African soldier killed in a rebel attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo this week was 27-year-old Rifleman Moalosi Albert Mokhothu.

He was named by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on Tuesday‚ a day after he and other SA peacekeepers were involved in a gun fight with rebels in the DRC.

Mokhothu was single‚ from Botshabelo‚ in Free State province. He belonged to the 1 Parachute Battalion unit in Bloemfontein.

Details on the repatriation of Mokhothu’s body would be announced as soon as all the required processes and procedures have been completed‚ the SANDF said.

Two South African soldiers were injured in the attack.

Rifleman Sidumo Simon Mbhamali‚ who is 25 years old‚ has a critical injury‚ which the SANDF said was a neck wound.

His unit is 4 South African Infantry Battalion (Middelburg) and his home town is Jozini‚ in KwaZulu-Natal.

Corporal Bonginkosi David Phakathi‚ 42‚ suffered a hand wound‚ which is minor‚ the SANDF said. From the Mpumalanga Signal Unit‚ his home town is KwaMashu.

The injured peacekeepers are currently receiving medical treatment in Goma.

The SANDF said on Monday that a gunfight broke out when members of the Mayi Mayi and Allied Democratic Forces groups attacked the SANDF position near Butembu around 6.30am. “The SANDF members‚ as part of the UN Stabilisation Mission in the Congo‚ engaged in a fire fight with the attackers and repelled the attack‚” said spokesman Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga. “After a lengthy stand-off the attackers fled and during consolidation of the scene it was established that four Mayi Mayi rebels were killed and two captured.”
