Entrepreneur and property developer Richard Maponya was one of 20 black business pioneers honoured on Friday for their contribution to business.

They were honoured at a gala dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre.

United Democratic Movement(UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa was among those who attended the event.

President Jacob Zuma‚who was a key note speaker at the event said the black business pioneers had‚ despite operating under restrictive laws of the apartheid regime‚ risen above their challenges and become household names.

“It is through the actions of these pioneers that we are able to motivate young people today.

“You have proven that black people are capable in business.”

Zuma said there was a need to register all informal traders including those who were from neighbouring countries.

“We can’t have mushrooming businesses without knowing who they are.”
