University of Cape Town transport drivers staying away from work because they feel unsafe have complained that the university is “threatening” them to return to work.

The workers‚ who have now been insourced‚ said they feared for their lives as they were targeted by protesters.

“We are not striking. We feel unsafe‚” said one driver who did not wish to be named for safety reasons.

He said the university had placed security guards on busses and transport vehicles for protection but was concerned that the guards would not be able to do anything if the vehicles were attacked.

“How can you protect something that is mobile? Is the security going to help us? When they throw a stone or a petrol bomb though the window‚ people will die‚ the security will die‚ we will all die‚” said the worker in UCT clothing.

He said that protesters targeted them because they were a “core service” and helped ferry students and staff to campus.

“We have been threatened by UCT to come to work‚ but we are the targets and we are working for our families‚” he said‚ adding that the university had hired outside workers to do their jobs and did not pay them for days not worked. — TMG Digital
